In a bid to support gay rights in Africa, Kenyan gay writer Binyavanga Wainana wore a white dress to a fundraiser in New York on Friday. In a series of posts on his social media accounts he showed off his new style taking pictures with famous celebrities such as American singer Janelle Monae. The dress was created by Siphokazi Dana, Singer Simphiwe Dana’s younger sister. And the hat he wore to complement the dress was donated by Frankie Edozien with ALBERT SAKHAI DESIGNS ,INC.
In all the photos that he took non stood out like the one he took with a skimpily dressed man.
Although Binyavanga Wainana is proud and unapologetic about who he is, his mother country Kenya is yet to come to terms with sexuality issues. Being gay in a society that condemns homosexuality and still holds its African values so dear is one of those things he will have to put up with for a long time to come.
