As the city woke up on Tuesday morning, some businessmen were busy counting their losses. Property of unknown value was destroyed after a fire razed down a number of stalls at Nairobi’s Gikomba market. According to a number of witnesses the fire is believed to have started in the wee hours of the morning at around 4.00 AM. So far no one knows what might have started the fire or caused it to spread so fast. However, efforts have been put in place to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the ever busy market.
Two fire engines are already at the scene and members of the Red Cross team are ready to give first aid to anyone who may be injured during the inferno. This is not the first time that a fire like this has burnt down several stalls. In May last year a similar fire which started at around 7pm burned down several stalls and two story residential buildings. At that time the fire was believed to have been caused by a faulty transformer.
