There has been a great debate following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s agreement with the Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni to import sugar into the country. A number of Kenyans led by the opposition leader Raila Odinga have seen it as move that is likely to weaken the local Sugar industry. According to the opposition, the best way to remedy high sugar deficit is to revive collapsing companies such as Mumias sugar Company that has been a center of drama between the Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and the Nairobi Governor, Dr. Evans Kidero.
Considering the prices of Uganda sugar, some citizens have supported the idea as well as business persons who feel that the deal is going to strengthen economic ties between these two countries. Although the former prime minister may have a point to put across, most consumers hold the opinion that cheap sugar will leave them with some little income to spend on other things especially when we look at the rising cost of living. From the debate, it is almost impossible to convince Kenyans that it may not be the right deal for our economic growth.
