Newly-opened Garden City Mall seemed to be the target of a terrorist attacks when a man was arrested trying to smuggle an improvised explosive device into the facility. The man was handed over to the Anti-Terror Police Unit, the ATPU for further investigations. The incident happened at 3:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon according to Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi, the man was detained by private security guards before they called the relevant authorities. Coincidentally, the United States government warned of terror attacks on US interests by extremist elements in South Africa according to media reports down south. It could not be established if the mall interception in Nairobi was linked to the happenings in South Africa as the South African government was unavailable for comment at the time.
The IED was exploded in an open ground by the bomb disposal unit. The ATPU nabbed two other men in connection with the device. Normal operations resumed at the mall after the bomb scare. The harrowing attacks at Westgate in 2013 where 67 people were killed by gunmen remain fresh in the minds of Kenyans.
