The tragic story of Alex Madaga shook the nation this past week. Alex was an accident victim who was severely injured after he was hit by a vehicle on Waiyaki Way. This is a story that should wake up Kenyans to the harsh realities of the health conditions in the country and the high price poor Kenyans have to pay for lacking resources to access medical services.
Brian Odhiambo, the student who relentlessly tried to save Madaga who had serious internal injuries, narrated that they embarked on an 18 hour drive around Nairobi hospitals seeking help for the wounded Alex. First, he was taken to Nairobi Women’s Hospital where they were told all ICU beds had been occupied then they left for Kenyatta National Hospital where the script was the same, they did not have bed space for critically injured patients. At this point, Madaga’s wife, Jessica Moraa, was helping Brian stabilize his breathing. They ensured that he had oxygen during what would be a long drive in the wee hours of the morning.
They rushed Alex to two private hospitals Coptic and Ladnan hospitals but they demanded Sh 200 000 upfront before they could tend to Alex who was on the brink of death at that time. His wife pleaded with the management of both hospitals but they refused to take Alex in, whose oxygen was running out. They had no choice but to go back to KNH and wait for bed space. That is where Madaga breathed his last.
