Samahani, mteja wa nambari uliyopiga hapatikani kwa sasa (Sorry, the mobile subscriber you are calling cannot be reached) is one of those phrases many safaricom subscribers have heard time and time again. This is one of those prompts you will always get if the person you are calling on the network is off air.
Hate it or love it, the voice message is not going away any time soon. For those who may not know this, the message prompt has been on air for over 15 years and was actually recorded months before Safaricom began its countrywide operations in October 2000.
Finally, the woman behind the annoying prompt was revealed. In a candid interview, a Mombasa born lady who goes by the name of Ms. Maggie Wazome told the “Daily Nation’s Lifestyle” that she voiced the prompt. She felt like it was the opportune time to let Kenyans know who she was.
She landed the gig after a successful interview with Andrew Crawford, who was then in charge of producing commercials for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).
Maggie beat 16 other potential candidates on her way to becoming a wildly familiar voice. In recent years she has voiced other safaricom prompts and also worked as a customer care representative for the company. She is currently a Support Analyst at Safaricom’s customer care department.
Ms. Wazome is a mother of two a daughter aged 22, and a son, 21.
