Regular security drills in a business premises or a learning institution can help save lives in case of a real emergency. At the Strathmore University things turned tragic, to say the least, during an impromptu security drill. Several students were left nursing injuries during the exercise. One student in particular had to be rushed to the emergency ward since she was in critical condition. The rest of the students who had minor injuries were moved to the Mater hospital where they were treated and discharged. The biggest percentage of the students were left traumatized and shocked at the turn of events.
Many of the students who were injured tried to leave through windows and jump from top floors. Some had to even cross an overflowing stream to safety. During the inferno, gunshots could be heard throughout the institution and students could be seen panicking and scampering in every direction.
Apparently, the drill was coordinated by the Administration Police officers without prior knowledge of police officers at the Lang’ata police station. However, they were notified as the drill got underway. According to Nairobi Police chief Japheth Koome, all protocols were followed and the drill was a success.
Here is a statement that was released by the institution following the drill.
