Traffic police in Kenya have for a long time gotten away with taking bribes from drivers. Corporal Barnaba Rutto and Constable Joel Atuti were not so lucky on Saturday as the president, Uhuru Kenyatta saw them take a bribe from a matatu driver on his was to Makupa Causeway.
The two officers had stopped traffic with the intention to get the bribe. Little did they know that the president’s motorcade was part of the vehicles in traffic. When the president and his security detail saw this, they arrested them and bundled them in the security detail car. They were held at Makupa for three days. Corporal Barnaba Rutto and Constable Joel Atuti were dismissed from service for blocking the president’s motorcade and taking bribes.
The president addressed his concerns and shock on the issue at a meeting he had with the police bosses at CID Training School based in Nairobi. He said that the actions of the traffic police are unacceptable. He also warned every government official that there will be consequences for anyone caught in corrupt dealings.
