Chaos ensued early this morning at the National Youth Service training school located at Gilgil following a stampede that led to 108 recruits being hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries. The Five of those injured were in critical condition and were transferred to the Nakuru Level 5 hospital for further treatment from the Gilgil Sub-County Hospital where the injured had been rushed by members of the Red Cross.
The stampede is said to have been caused by the explosion of a transformer on site that had the recruits fleeing to safety fearing a terrorist attack especially in the wake of the EL Adde attack. However, sources have revealed that the stampede was caused when four recruits who had been playing hooky from the morning parade, spotted their superiors and started running towards their colleagues to avoid getting caught and punished, thereby starting a panic among the recruits and the resulting stampede. The commandant in charge, Isaac Ndirangu, denied the reports on the transformer explosion and told the media that learning had resumed.
