Papa Wemba, the King of Congolese Rhumba died at the age of 66. Wemba, whose real name was Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, died shortly after collapsing on stage in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The death of the music maestro is not only a big loss to Africa but also the entire world. A video footage recorded during his live performance in Abidjan showed him slumping before a group of dancers.
Later on, the most celebrated artist was rushed to the nearest clinic where he was pronounced dead. Wemba rose to the limelight because of his amazing blend of African, Cuban as well as Western sounds. The musician is said to have fell ill during the early hours of Saturday morning. The actual cause of his death is yet to be established. Wemba will be remembered for modernizing Congolese music with a genre named Soukous. He was also a great style icon whose fashion influenced many youths and adults as well. Millions of people across the world have sent their condolences to the family of the late singer.
