With the recent deaths of almost 51 leaving more than 150 people in Huruma homeless, another building has collapsed. The cause of the collapse of the building in Nairobi’s Huruma estate was poor construction. Heavy rains in April made water sip into the cracked walls and foundation, making the entire structure weak. Additionally, the building had been put up in a swampy area.
According to Kariobangi South MCA, Robert Mbatia, the building was completed 7 months ago and only 6 tenants had moved in at the start of July. They were however forced to evacuate quickly when the building developed huge cracks on Monday. Speaking on the buildings location, Mbatia said that he had raised concerns with the departments of planning, as the 5 storey building had been built in a swampy place. He had a hunch that it was bound to collapse but nothing had been done.
The video taken by a bystander’s shows just how disastrous it would have been if tenants were inside. The entire building collapsed in less than a minute hurling pieces of debris and dust in all directions. Here is the shocking video taken.
