In a rather unfortunate turn of event, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has disqualified Ezekiel Kemboi from the 3000-steeplechase run. This came after Kemboi won a bronze medal after finishing third in the race. Unaware at the time, Kemboi went on to announce his retirement from athletics with a happy smile although he had been aiming for the gold. He caught wind of the disqualification after Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad of France filed a formal complaint stating that Kemboi had stepped out of the line during the race.
Mekhissi-Benabbad will later move to the third position taking Kemboi’s bronze medal after the appeal.
The lane violation appeal sends Kemboi to a sad retirement for a man who’d dominated the 3000-steeplechase race for many years. As is expected, Kenyans are not happy with this ruling since it has adversely affected the country’s ranking in the RIO 2016 Olympic Games.
