With the protests done by Multimedia students a few days ago still fresh in mind, it may seem all that was in vain as the driver of the ill-fated matatu has been granted bail. The protests began after 5 people were killed in an accident which could have clearly been avoided on Langata road. Residents along with the students decided to protest against the increase in reckless driving on the road.
The driver in question Mr Francis Mukuria Kinyanjui also known as Ambulance has been granted a cash bail of 1 million. Since he cannot raise the amount, he is expected to remain in custody for 2 weeks until investigations done by the police are concluded. The killer driver had been on the ran before he decided it was wise to turn himself in at a police station. He has since been charged with operating without a license, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and causing death due to reckless driving.
Magistrate Barbara Ojoo stated that even though the gravity of the case is serious and public outrage is high, Mr Francis Kinyanjui will still be treated well and his constitutional rights upheld.
The case is expected to be heard again in court in 2 weeks.
