It seems the matatu menace is getting out of hand. Even after the imposition of heavy fines and laws to improve safety the accidents involving matatus still seem to be on the rise. On Tuesday, a high school student hanging on a speeding matatu fell to his death in in Biretwo, Elgeyo Marakwet county. According to witnesses the St Peter’s Kobulwo Secondary School lost his grip and fell of the vehicle around Tambach area.
At the time of the incident the student had been sent away from school due to some school fees arrears. According to County police commander Sharif Abdallah, several students were spotted hanging dangerously from the matatu. The matatu driver and conductor will definitely have to be held accountable since they were aware of this but did nothing to ensure the safety of the students. The body of the dead student is currently at the Iten County Referral Hospital mortuary.
