In a televised statement Jacob Zuma announced that he was quitting with immediate effect even though he was unhappy with the decision his own party, ANC, had taken. The party advised him to step down or face a no-confidence vote in parliament. For a while now the Juma had been under immense pressure from his party to give power to his Deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa.
Since coming into power in 2009 Zuma’s presidency has been marred by numerous scandals and allegations of corruption.
According to Zuma’s resignation statement, he made the decision to step down to avoid any violence or division within the ANC party. In his statement, he said, “No life should be lost in my name and also the ANC should never be divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect.”
